Nightly service N°9 · dep 21:04, platform 7
Board in Vienna.
Wake above the lake.
One line, one night. The Meridian Sleeper leaves Vienna as the city sits down to dinner and pulls into Klarsee as the mountains catch first light. You do nothing but sleep — the night does the driving.

Dinner at speed, on white linen
The lamps come on before the suburbs run out. Three courses cross the table while the Danube valley slides past the glass — the chef boards in Vienna each afternoon and cooks whatever the market gave him that morning.
- 21:40First sitting. Alpine char, or the schnitzel we refuse to take off the menu.
- 23:15Second sitting, quieter, for those who like the window dark.
- TO 01:00The bar car pours Grüner Veltliner and one very good cognac.
While you were at dinner, your cabin became a bedroom
Come back from the dining car and the seats are gone: bed made, sheets cool, reading lamp lit, a square of dark chocolate on the pillow. The attendant asks one question — what time would you like the mountains? — and sets your wake knock accordingly.
- LINENWashed cotton, pressed in Vienna the same day. Wool blanket in sleeper burgundy.
- LAMPBrass, dimmable to reading or to almost-nothing. The dark out there is the point.
- KNOCKYour wake call is a knuckle on wood and coffee at the door. No speakers on this train.
Three ways to sleep at 110 km/h
This is Wagon 4, drawn to scale. Rest on a compartment and its bed folds down; choose the one that fits the night you want.
Classic Twin
Two berths, one window, and the old arithmetic of the couchette done properly. Share with a friend or book the whole compartment for yourself.
- Upper and lower berth, real linen on both
- Washbasin behind a walnut panel
- Breakfast tray at your chosen hour

The border happens without you
Somewhere on the pass, the train stops for eleven minutes. An officer walks the corridor with a soft torch, our attendant hands over the passports you left at the desk, and the only stamp you'll hear is the one you find in the morning. Most passengers learn the border happened at breakfast.
Lift the blind an inch
This is the stretch the night was for. The line climbs out of the valley in the last blue hour, and by 05:47 the peaks above Klarsee are lit rose-gold while the water below is still asleep. Coffee arrives with the knock you ordered. Nobody talks much in the corridor at this hour; there is nothing to add.
- 05:47Sunrise on the Klarwand face, weather permitting. It usually permits.
- 06:30Breakfast in the dining car or on the tray at your window.
- 07:30Klarsee. Platform 1, lake side. Twenty steps from train to water.
